How did you become a member:
I was looking for a networking group to expand my business, and a friend told me about LeTip. I visited one of their chapters in Mission Valley, but they only had a dozen or so members. When I asked about larger groups, their President, Lex Gilbert, suggested I visit the La Jolla chapter that had nearly 50 members.
The best way to tip me is:
The most valuable tip for me would be a marketing company or advertising agency with multiple clients. My forté is production. I love working with "artistic" types like art directors, making their vision come to life.
My best experience at Le Tip La Jolla is:
I have met many wonderfully people through LeTip. This group has provided over 25% of my total revenue this year.
A little bit about myself:
I was born in San Diego, but my father was in the military (first the Navy, then the Air Force), so I have lived all over – California, Florida, Hawaii, Japan, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Germany, Missouri, Louisiana, Georgia, and New York/New Jersey.
I have worked as a news photographer "stringer" for the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register; as an Assistant Manger for T,G,&Y Variety Stores in Huntington Beach; a calculator salesman in West Los Angeles and Santa Monica for Singer/Frieden, and an encyclopedia salesman for Collier, Americana, Book of Knowledge, and Britannica; and a gourmet cookie distributor in Los Angeles and San Diego.
I first started graphic design in 1977 (before computers) because I didn't know enough to explain to someone else what I wanted in a printed brochure. My first project was a series of workbooks for 3rd thru 6th graders teaching Library Science. That series was reprinted over a dozen times. My second project was a cookbook – a fund-raiser for a hospital in Long Beach, California. Because I enjoyed the work so much, it became my new career.
I am a "Mac fanatic" using state-of-the-art Macintosh computers and peripherals. No one in San Diego (or probably anywhere else) has a better, faster, more powerful workstation than I.
Besides graphic design, I also am a US Coast Guard-licensed Captain who teaches Beginning Sailing and Coastal Cruising through Harbor Sailboats, and give private lessons on boat handling to boat owners. I also conduct private and corporate charters on a variety of vessels, both power and sail, from 22-feet to 90-feet long. I have sailed the Caribbean from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands to Venezuela, and from San Diego to Hawaii to Tahiti, as well as many trips to and from Mexico.
